Pay: $30,000 - $85,000 per year, based on selected track, experience, credentials, and certification

Position Overview

The SOS Agency is seeking 2 skilled, dependable, and flexible Full-Time Staff ASL Interpreters to join our growing team.

We are hiring for two full-time position and will select the candidates who best meet the needs of one of two potential tracks:

Track 1: Certified / Multi-Setting Staff Interpreter

Track 2: Educational Staff Interpreter

The Certified / Multi-Setting Staff Interpreter may provide services across a wide variety of settings, including K–12 and higher education, medical, mental health, business, government, vocational rehabilitation, conferences, trainings, community events, and other assignments based on qualifications and agency needs.

The Educational Staff Interpreter will primarily support K–12 educational and GVRA/vocational rehabilitation assignments, including recurring placements, substitute coverage, short-term vacancies, and other assignments appropriate to the interpreter’s qualifications and experience.

The individuals selected will be hired for one of these tracks based on their qualifications, credentials, experience, skill set, and The SOS Agency’s current coverage needs.

Schedule: Core Hours + Flex Hours

This is a 40-hour-per-week staff position, not a freelance or traditional on-call position.

We want our Staff Interpreters to have the consistency and stability of full-time employment while maintaining the flexibility necessary to respond to the changing needs of our customers and consumers.

The positions will therefore include a combination of core scheduled hours and flexible coverage hours.

Core hours will provide a predictable weekly schedule. During these hours, the Staff Interpreters may be assigned to recurring interpreting assignments, coverage assignments, internal agency responsibilities, meetings, trainings, professional development, or resource development.

A designated portion of the employee’s weekly schedule will remain flexible to accommodate interpreting needs that may occur outside of typical core hours. This may include early mornings, evenings, or occasional weekends.

When flex hours are used outside of the employee’s typical schedule, the weekly schedule may be adjusted accordingly to maintain approximately 40 working hours per week.

Specific core hours, flex-hour expectations, and availability will be discussed during the hiring process.

Primary Responsibilities

Provide high-quality, culturally responsive ASL/English interpreting services within settings appropriate to the employee’s qualifications and credentials.

Provide recurring, substitute, short-term, urgent, and coverage interpreting services as assigned.

Assist with difficult-to-fill assignments and coverage gaps within the employee’s qualified settings.

Interpret for The SOS Agency staff meetings, trainings, internal meetings, and other agency communications as needed.

Interpret and/or assist with internal and external resources, including trainings, presentations, educational materials, videos, and agency initiatives.

Complete internal projects, professional development, or other assigned responsibilities during scheduled hours when interpreting assignments are not available.

Travel to customer locations throughout the assigned service area as scheduled.

Maintain strong ethical decision-making, confidentiality, and professional boundaries.

Communicate promptly and professionally with the scheduling team regarding assignment updates, concerns, delays, or changes.

Adapt professionally to different consumers, communication preferences, environments, and assignment types.

Represent The SOS Agency professionally and demonstrate The SOS Way in interactions with consumers, customers, colleagues, and community partners.

Participate in agency meetings, trainings, professional development, and other activities as required.

Track 1: Certified / Multi-Setting Staff Interpreter

This track is designed for an experienced interpreter who can provide coverage across multiple settings and assignment types.

Preferred Qualifications:

RID Certification (NIC, CI/CT), BEI Advanced or higher, or comparable recognized certification.

Significant professional interpreting experience.

Experience working across multiple settings, which may include medical, mental health, business, government, higher education, K–12 education, vocational rehabilitation, conferences, trainings, and community assignments.

Strong ethical decision-making and ability to navigate complex interpreting environments.

Ability to transition effectively between different settings, consumers, and communication needs throughout the workweek.

Experience with both in-person and remote interpreting.

Track 2: Educational Staff Interpreter

This track is designed primarily to support K–12 educational and GVRA/vocational rehabilitation assignments.

Preferred Qualifications:

Demonstrated K–12 educational interpreting experience.

EIPA score of 4.0 or higher preferred.

National certification is welcomed but is not required for the Educational Staff Interpreter track.

Appropriate educational interpreting credentials and qualifications based on applicable placement requirements.

Experience with vocational rehabilitation or adult educational/vocational settings is a plus.

Strong understanding of educational interpreting practices, professional boundaries, and the interpreter’s role within K–12 environments.

Ability to work effectively with Deaf and hard-of-hearing students across varying ages, communication needs, and educational environments.

Experience collaborating professionally with teachers, administrators, related service providers, vocational rehabilitation professionals, and other members of the educational team.

Ability to provide substitute, short-term, and recurring K–12 and vocational rehabilitation coverage based on agency needs.

General Qualifications

Fluency in American Sign Language (ASL) and spoken/written English.

Professional interpreting experience.

Strong ethical judgment and professional boundaries.

Strong interpersonal and communication skills.

Dependability and flexibility.

Ability to work independently while remaining part of an agency team.

Reliable transportation and ability to travel to on-site assignments.

Comfortable using technology, including Google Workspace, Zoom, Microsoft Teams, and agency scheduling/communication platforms.

Successful completion of The SOS Agency’s required interpreting skills assessment.
